What a Man's Watch Says about Him
Watches as big as hubcaps… Colors that men never wore before… Diamonds covering the face of a blinged-out timepiece... What are men trying to say about themselves with their watches? The truth is, men don't have many chances to express themselves. Most don't wear jewelry, and many jobs require conservative dress. One of the few ways he can express his personality is through his timekeeper. Understanding why your male customers buy watches, even if they don't realize it themselves, can make your salespeople that much more effective.

For some of the reasons why people buy watches, we turned to Yvonne Thomas, PhD., a psychologist in Los Angeles. “There are several things that can consciously and subconsciously influence the selection of a watch. Consciously, men wonder if it's a name brand, if it looks expensive so they won't look cheap, or if it looks classy.
Subconsciously, they may be attracted to a certain watch if it has a brand name to keep up the Joneses. They want to look like they have money, or have people know that they have money. Sometimes, people purchase a gold watch because it makes them feel more secure or to bring their self esteem up. Subconsciously, people have associations or connections at a deep level. They often don't even know why something feels comforting or comfortable, yet there might be sentimentality and nostalgia attached. Later, they might realize that their watch looks like their father’s or grandfather’s. It's amazing how people at a subconscious level remember things that feel right, but they don't consciously remember the connection.”

“If James Bond wears an Omega, people might subconsciously want to wear that watch to feel a little bit like James Bond. On a primitive level, you associate a watch with an actor, a sports figure – someone who made a positive impression on you. Maybe that person reminds you of you, so the watch fits your image of yourself. If you aren't a diver, you could be a diver, that kind of thing. Other people may wish they are like that person, subconsciously, so they wear the watch.”
